Toward an Infinite Message Store
SUMMARY A typical user now sends and receives close to 20 MB of data every day. The current model of e-mail storage – one that relies on proprietary message stores on the mail-server – has serious practical and technical limitations, and as such, is not a sustainable model. The e-mail archiving industry, expected to reach over $4 billion per year in vendor revenue by 2009 has emerged primarily because of the inherent storage flaws in this traditional model.
A new storage model that offers customers open, scalable message storage and is vendor-neutral is badly needed. This paper discusses the importance and urgency of resolving this issue and presents a high-level roadmap toward an Open E-mail Storage model.
