Stop the Madness
SUMMARY For years, conventional wisdom in information technology (IT) was that big problems
needed big solutions. This wisdom is now being challenged as it becomes evident
that it is possible and maybe even preferable, to solve big problems with simpler,
more straight-forward solutions.
Monolithic technology solutions with equally grandiose promises have characterized
systems deployment since the early days of data processing. Big-iron in the 70s and
80s followed by big-soft solutions in the 90s clouded our decision-making for
decades with their big promises. Big solutions captured both the imagination and
budgets of an entire generation of IT managers.
